Grounding Questions
• What usually shapes how we define love—culture or Scripture?
• Why is love sometimes easier to affirm than to practice?
Expanded Teaching
Immediately after teaching about abiding, Jesus commands believers to love one another as He has loved them.
Love is not an emotional preference but covenant obedience. Jesus defines love through sacrifice, not sentiment.
Abiding allows believers to receive Christ’s love and reflect it outward. Jesus also shifts the disciples’ identity from servants to friends, showing that love flows from relationship and shared mission with Him.
Group Discussion Questions
• What makes sacrificial love difficult in everyday relationships?
• How does abiding strengthen our ability to love consistently?
• Why does Jesus connect friendship with obedience?
